Halloween Eve in Weehawken, New Jersey -- not exactly Transylvania but close enough. Catherine (Lynn Redgrave) is throwing a party and invites two couples to share the scary festivities. Uninvited guests include two ghosts, Catherine's Great-Grandfather (William Hurt) and a flapper from the Roaring '20s (Samantha Mathis). Catherine's friend Rick (Harry Connick Jr.) brings along a storefront psychic (Tyne Daly) who predicts that by New Year's Eve one of the couples will break up. Paranoia reigns and both couples begin to self-destruct as the fateful eve approaches.

The Operator revolves around Gary Wheelan, a young, married, smooth- operating Dallas attorney with "the perfect life." His world suddenly changes when in the middle of a bad day, he gets a wrong number from directory assistance and explodes, venting his frustration to the telephone operator. He soon learns that she was the wrong woman to offend.
