Halloween Eve in Weehawken, New Jersey -- not exactly Transylvania but close enough. Catherine (Lynn Redgrave) is throwing a party and invites two couples to share the scary festivities. Uninvited guests include two ghosts, Catherine's Great-Grandfather (William Hurt) and a flapper from the Roaring '20s (Samantha Mathis). The Operator revolves around Gary Wheelan, a young, married, smooth- operating Dallas attorney with "the perfect life." His world suddenly changes when in the middle of a bad day, he gets a wrong number from directory assistance and explodes, venting his frustration to the telephone operator.
