CLOSING NIGHT SPRING 2002 SERIES

5/20 - THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES

"THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES is a romantic comedy of escalating errors about an imperious ruler who rediscovers life as a regular person – and the commoner who gets a tantalizing taste of power and fame as his impostor. Ian Holm (“Lord of the Rings,” “Sweet Hereafter”) plays both the autocratic Napoleon and the oafish deck-hand who trades places with him. As both men explore their new fates, the result is a moving and entertaining romp not only through history, but also through identity, ambition, and love’s power to transcend both."

5/6 Xingfu shiguang (HAPPY TIMES)

"Happy Times is a small but broad Chinese language comedy about human nature when it comes to love and the pursuit of happiness. Middle-aged Ding Shikou visits a matchmaker to find a wife. Finally, she sends him the perfect one. Desperate to impress her, Ding promises her a far more extravagant wedding than he can afford, leading her to believe he is rich. Then desperate, to make money, Ding refurbishes an abandoned railway car on Lover's Lane and charges admission for young couples wandering by. Up in the woods, he discovers a young blind girl who's just attempted suicide. He saves her life this time only to witness her attempt again. She tells him she wouldn't be so desperate if she had a job, so he offers one at his hotel, in hopes of re-instilling the will to live in her. Ding tells her a tangled and hilarious mess of lies in order to employ her. He even has a group of old retirees create a fake hotel environment in an abandoned factory, so she believes she has a legitimate job. Finally, he must tell her the truth and come clean to his fiancée, which turns out to be both a heartbreaking and hilarious life lesson for all involved." Link

Monday April 1st - CAT'S MEOW

Live Appearance by Legendary Director Peter Bogdanovich (Paper Moon, What's Up Doc, Last Picture Show, Mask)

Hosted by Industry Personality Peter Travers

Cast:

Edward Herrmann
Kirsten Dunst
Jennifer Tilly
Cary Elwes
Eddie Izzard
Joanna Lumley
Directed by Peter Bogdanovich

Based upon: The play of the same title by Steven Peros, which was itself based upon the true story of the death (murder?) of Thomas H. Ince that took place on the yacht of publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Movie fans probably know Hearst best as the "inspiration" Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, as recently depicted in the excellent HBO film, RKO-281. What exactly happened on the yacht has never been proven, but this film offers one rumored scenario.

Premise: This movie takes a look at what might have been a scandalous murder (and the subsequent cover-up) of Thomas H. Ince (Elwes) on board William Randolph Hearst's yacht, Oneida, in 1924. The center of the story is the jealousy that Hearst (Hermann) feels about his extremely young lover, Marion Davies (Dunst), and what happens when he suspects that she's having an affair with Charlie Chaplin (Izzard). With gossip columnist (and Hearst employee) Louella Parsons (Tilly) and a gaggle of celebrities also on board, any "cover-up" is going to be tricky, at best... or is it?

Filming: Production started on this movie on November 12th, 2000, with locations to include Berlin and the Greek islands, and wrapped in mid-December, 2000.

Official Distributor Synopsis: Lions Gate Films

Who's Thomas Ince?: Thomas Ince, the center of this story, wore many hats in silent era Hollywood, including producer, director, and writer, but he's best known for establishing the "studio system" of producing many films at a furious pace. Film100.com named him the #19 most influential figure in film.
