5/24 - WINTERS BONE



Winter's Bone: Based on the novel by Daniel Woodrel, and adapted for the screen by Anne Rosellini and Debra Granik, Winter's Bone centers on 17 year-old Ree Dolly (Lawrence). Ree must track down her father, who has disappeared after putting up the family's house up for his bail bond. In order secure the safety and well-being of her two younger siblings and her mentally ill mother, she must challenge her outlaw kin's code of silence. Risking her life, she must hack through the lies, the brutal threats and clever evasions offered up by her relatives, in order to piece together the truth.

5/17 - SOLITARY MAN



SOLITARY MAN tells the story of Ben Kalmen, a fifty-something New Yorker and former successful car dealer, who through his own bad choices lost his entire business. When the film opens, Ben's on the verge of a comeback, but some of the same motivations that led to his demise are threatening to take him down again. He's divorced from Nancy, his college sweetheart and the one person who knows him better than anyone. Although he still finds the time to hang out with his daughter Susan and his adoring grandson, she breaks off contact when she discovers he's seeing one of her friends. His girlfriend Jordan is the daughter of a very influential businessman who's on the board of a major auto manufacturer. If Ben can just keep his hubris in check for a little while longer, he will be back as big as ever. But circumstances place him in very close proximity with the one girl he shouldn't touch, throwing everything into jeopardy.

4/26 - WELCOME HOME


Bilal, a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee, has struggled his way through Europe for the last three months trying to reunite with his girlfriend, who recently emigrated to England. But his journey comes to an abrupt halt when he is stopped by authorities in Calais, on the French side of the Channel. Left with no other alternatives, he decides to swim across. Bilal goes to the local swimming pool to train, where he meets Simon, a middle-aged swimming instructor in turmoil over his imminent divorce. Simon agrees to help Bilal, hoping to win back the affection of his wife, who does volunteer work helping immigrants. But what begins as a relationship based on self interest, develops into something much bigger than Simon could ever have imagined, as he too will ultimately risk everything to reach happiness.

Life is good for Kate (Catherine Keener) and Alex (Oliver Platt). After decades of marriage, they have settled into a comfortable rapport, and success in their estate-sale antique furniture business has allowed them to finance an expansion of their Greenwich Village apartment. They purchase the (occupied) unit next door, and begin the wait for its elderly tenant Andra (Ann Guilbert) to pass on so they can proceed with their construction plans. Feeling guilty about their impatience for Andra's death, the family reaches out to her granddaughters Mary and Rebecca (respectively Amanda Peet and Rebecca Hall) for some moral grounding, only to find the new relationships compounding their ethical conundrum rather than alleviating it.
